Achieving career development by setting goals

November 19th, 2007

The setting up of goals and making master plans for your accomplishments or executionswith no flaws, are the prime skills needed for success. For, these goals and plans would determine your ambitions or long dreams of a successful career. Before starting to work towards your career achievement, one must set a clear goal, on what he or she wants to be, what kind of job or business would be of his interest, what kind of life he would love to lead, what level of achievement in wealth building would be satisfying for him, and things as such. Once the fundamental career goals are set, he must work out a plan to execute and work hard towards the goals. On working out , there are many discouraging or frustrating results or opinions and advices bound to come your way, not from far but from the close quarters like your friends or colleagues, saying ‘’Oh.. You’re trying to count the stars on the sky’’

Comments like these are not to be taken as the ultimate criticism or the only truth about your goals that may sound impossible for that person who commented that way. That comment actually shows how pessimistic he or she is.

Most people, though they claim they don’t care for anyone, they actually get strongly influenced by negative comments and opinions of others.

At the same time, while setting goals and drawing plans of executing them with highly positive thinking, you must also be prepared to encounter temporary setbacks and unexpected failures.

A failure in an attempt is not to be looked at as the result of the whole process but instead it should serve as a reminder/warning to correct or fine tune shortcomings in the plan, effort or may be the very skill. If failure seems to point at lack of a particular skill, then it is high time that the required skills must be given a thought and worked towards enhancing them. Well worked out plan, hard work and commitment are the basics for achieving a career goal.

Career and Meanigful Life

November 18th, 2007

There is a better way to live your life. Meaningful purpose is a driving force that adds enthusiasm to your days. Taking a passion and making it your career — living a dream — can be not just a wish, but a true and certain reality. Career Fairs can occasionally be intimidating. As a job-seeker, you must distinguish yourself from hundreds or even thousands of other job applicants. Here are a few steps to get the new career rolling:

Many career fairs are free, but some require a registration and/or fee. The first place to look for a career fair is your alma mater. Colleges and universities routinely hold career fairs for students and alumni. Every person is born with a unique set of natural abilities. Talents, such as managing, creating, researching, training others, drawing, can all seem like easy work because you have a natural flair for them. True happiness comes from combining your natural talents, developing and excelling in them, and working in a field, job, industry that you have a passionate interest in.

Many organizations require membership for admission to the conference and career fair, but some sell day-long “placement-only” admission. Make a decision. Many people flounder for years and never turn their dreams into reality. They let themselves remain in a negative or stuck place. Only action can change your life. Read a book. Take vocational tests. Use a good career-management professional. Do some career exploration and gather all the information you need.

Arrive Early. As a career-fair recruiting veteran, I can confidently attest that my ability to remember names, faces, and details of candidates waned as the day went on. Rolling my materials into each career fair, I set up my table in eager anticipation of the fabulous candidates I would find. As the fair picked up, while my eagerness never diminished, my ability to remember candidate details did. Go early to ensure quality time with the recruiters. Then make a decision and go forward. Outline the action steps to reach your career goal. The only thing at stake is your happiness. Finding meaning, passion and purpose every day you go to work is the wonderful reward, so don’t wait any longer. Begin right now and set in motion your own plan to live a happier, more satisfying life.

Follow-up is extremely important. Recruiters will collect hundreds or thousands of resumes at a large career fair. If you are interested in applying for a specific position, go to the company Web site and apply directly using the company’s preferred format. Open your cover letter by indicating that you discovered the position at theAsiaAlive! Career Fair and in speaking with recruiter Aurora Crawford, you became convinced that this was the position for you. You may also want to follow up with an email to the recruiter directly, if that information is on the business card.

Many career fair veterans agree that beginning in the back of the room and working your way to the front is the way to go – you are seeing recruiters fresh, while people who started in the front may be starting to lose energy. While you are getting the lay of the land, pick up information from the tables. Information, as well as freebies such as pens, magnets, and stress balls, are there for the taking. Gather information on companies of particular interest and sit down in the candidate lounge. Information may include company annual reports, brochures, and a list of open positions. Review the materials so that you have a starting point for conversation with each recruiter.
